First Contact

So the United Nations has announced its intentions to prepare for alien contact. It has placed Mazlan Othman as the head of a committee that will handle any "take me to your leader" situations. This action occurred after the discovery of several hundred more planets. So I'm wondering what everyone thinks on this matter. Does anyone think this is actually necessary, or is the UN taking this a step too far?

Can't say that I see it as the best use of the UN's time, but I'm also not sorry to see that they are at least a little forward thinking. I mean, just because we've found a few more planets out there doesn't mean that contact with intelligent aliens is much more likely, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

Unfortunately, the story is actually a hoax.

If it was true, then it would be pretty awesome! (Though unlikely to generate any positive results...)

Yeah, I just saw where FoxNews released the story was not true. I'm a little disappointed, but I guess if anyone now wants to discuss credibility of news reports they can feel free to!

I've been had! Too good to be true, I guess.

I don't think it is necessary for the UN to waste their time on aliens. However, I may be biased because I think that we are the only intelligent life in the universe.

Ha! Way to go guys ;) I didn't believe it. If anybody would get caught up in something this pointless, it would be NASA, not the UN. The UN has much more important things to deal with here. And to be honest....who cares if intelligent life exists elsewhere? I live on Earth and am only concerned with what happens on our little planet.

I couldn't help reading this and thinking of "Blocked." It was sounding perhaps a bit too unnecessary seeing as it would have spent quite a lot of money before we were even sure that these planets would have life. Like in "Blocked" we aren't sure if there really are aliens or if the governments on earth at the time are just trying to get people to move underground because of the financial benefits. I'm also strangely reminded of Area 51 times... the connection being that they potentially used "ufos" to cover up testing, and this could be a cover up for some sort or ridiculous UN spending.
